Tell Me How You Really Feel

The Expressive Potential of Poetry and Literary Journalism

Too much of what we want to say lies in the territory beyond words. Reducing to simple language our infinite and nuanced feelings seems to do them an injustice. Through literary journalism and poetry, this project explores just this: the problem of expressing emotion through language.

Note: Don't miss the 'In Theory' section at the bottom of each poem!

This is the torchlight provided by words: in the gaping darkness of our endless and unknowable selves, words lay bare a feeling for someone else to recognise. Words make precise what seems boundless. Words make intimate what might remain isolated.
And yet so often, words fail us.
